In 2010 I ended up herniating 2 discs in my lower spine, L4-L5 from going to the gym too often combined with excessive drinking and passing out in weird positions, not as an alcoholic but as a party animal. I know it’s definitely a strange injury! I couldn’t sleep properly & couldn’t walk normally. I had major sciatic nerve pain radiating from my toes all the way up to my left hip. At times after driving I wouldn’t be able to get out of my car due to muscles seizing. I went through chiropractor and physiotherapy for 2 years spending astronomical amounts of money, I definitely got better but just manageable kind of a better. After all that I went to the doctor because the pain was still there, they prescribed me nerve numbing medication that I would have to take on the daily to reduce the pain. Either that or have an appointment to have a steroid injection into my spine. I didn’t do neither of the options, I thought to myself “what is the point of taking all these medications when all it is doing is just masking the pain that exists within?” These are things to treat the symptoms, the superficial things, not the root cause. You got a headache? Pop a Tylenol, did you cure the problem? Or did you just mask the underlying pain? After this realization only then did I set myself out on the journey to heal myself, you have to fix yourself no one else can fix you for you. I studied my own body and came to find out how stiff I was, how inflexible I am and how everything in the body is interrelated, connected to each other. Tight muscles may lead to tightness of other areas, lower back, shoulders, etc. So I searched for the closest yoga studio because I thought “that may be the best way to get more flexible!” I came across Bikrams yoga Metrotown. Took my first class, it was a roller coaster ride extremely difficult, but at the same time extremely rewarding. The postures are a diagnostic tool it simply tells you what areas of the body needs a little more love. With love I mean, strengthening, stretching, compressing, and all that good stuff. My journey was tough, but so is everyone else’s! Nothing worth having comes? Easy! Fast forward to the present moment, I am a lot stronger, flexible and definitely healthier now than I was before I even injured myself. Hence why I have dedicated myself to the yoga, it has done wonders for me physically and mentally, and I’m sure you can benefit from it as well. You can choose to stay home in pain, complain and make all the excuses in the world, you are not fooling nobody but yourself! Remember you have all the potential and ability in the world to do better and succeed, ultimately, the choice is yours.
