Bikram Yoga is the traditional hot yoga, comprised of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. Each 90 minute class is identical, so you always know what is coming. There is no need for previous yoga experience as the teacher will provide clear dialogue to get you in and out of each posture safely. Each class starts with a breathing exercise and 3 warm up postures to get you focused and ready for class. The remainder of the standing series targets strength, flexibility and balance. The second portion of class is on the floor, with a spine strengthening series, backbends and forward folds. Class ends with a final breathing exercise. Every 90 minutes follows the same sequence, allowing you to quiet the mind and completely focus on the physical practise. The heat helps to relax the muscles allowing one to stretch with greater ease and helps to improve circulation. The class overall is a powerful cardiovascular workout, helps to build lean muscle, increase stamina and improve flexibility. This yoga practise will help create a mind and body connection.
Yin yoga has 3 main components: passive postures held over time using gravity to deepen the stretch. Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissue called fascia. Fascia is what covers each muscle group but also individual muscle fibers. So with passive postures held for 5 minutes at a time, this allows the nervous system to calm down and allow the deep tissues to stretch. Benefits include increased relaxation, increased circulation, improved flexibility and greater joint mobility. This is a great compliment to a Bikram but is also very beneficial on its own.
